The U.S. Green Building council's
leed rating system
The U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED™(Leadership
in Energy & Environmental Design) rating system
was developed in response to market demand for a
definition of a “Green” building. Through the
LEED program, the USGBC promotes the design,
construction, and operation of buildings that
significantly reduce or eliminate negative
impacts on the environment and occupants. In the
LEED rating system, points are awarded for the
use of environmentally friendly materials and
construction practices.
To obtain LEED Certification, a building must
qualify for a minimum of 26 points. Additional
points can be obtained to achieve the Silver
(33-38 pts.), Gold (39-51 pts.), or Platinum
(52-69 pts.) level of certification. VERSICO'S
roofing products and systems can assist building
in obtaining LEED certification by contributing
to the following areas:
|
Heat
Island Effect: Roofs
LEED offers 1 point for the use of ENERGY STAR®
qualified (highly reflective) and high
emissivity roofing materials on at least 75% of
the roof surface. This point can also be
achieved through the use of a vegetated roof
system on at least 50% of the roof, or
combination vegetated/reflective material on 75%
of the surface. VERSICO offers a wide variety of
ENERGY STAR qualified coatings and membranes as
well their LiveRoof System. |
|
|
Recycled
Content
Up to 2 points can be obtained through the use
of products that contain recycled content. To
obtain the first point, 5% of the total value of
materials in the project must contain recycled
content. An additional point is achieved when
the total material value meets or exceeds10%
recycled content. Most of the roofing products
we provide contain recycled content, which can directly
contribute to obtaining the recycled content
points. |

|
Storm-water Management
The use of vegetated roof systems decreases site
imperviousness to storm-water runoff. This helps
to reduce storm-water flow rate and the amount of
total suspended solid sand phosphorous.
VERSICO'S LiveRoof System can help to obtain up to
2 points by controlling the rate and quantity of
runoff while improving the water quality. |
Renewable
Energy
To reduce the environmental impact associated
with fossil fuel energy use, the LEED rating
system encourages the use of renewable energy by
offering up to 3 points to buildings that use
on-site renewable energy sources. These points can be obtained through the use of
Photovoltaic Roofing Solutions.
|
Other Credit
Areas
Additional points may be obtained through the
use of regionally manufactured materials and by
using innovative design practices. Innovative
combinations of Green materials outside of the
normal requirements can qualify for up to 4
points.
